Yesterday some worrying news or information was released by Facebook on their security page stating that they will soon be notifying users if their account "has been compromised by an attacker suspected of working on behalf of a nation-state"
The post by Alex Stamos, Facebook's Chief Security officer also wrote that "While we have always taken steps to secure accounts that we believe to have been compromised, we decided to show this additional warning if we have a strong suspicion the attack could be government sponsored" The post also went on to say "We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts"
This post from Facebook should go as warning to everybody to ensure that your accounts are secure by more than a password. Facebook will now show this warning to users
I advised in this previous post about 2 step verification for your Apple ID but all mail accounts (I think) and social media offer some form of 2 step verification which significantly reduces the chance of your account being hacked.
Facebook is an easy one to sort, all you need to do is:
Go to Settings> Security > tick the box Login Approvals On This will turn on either text or code generator support that will require authorisation or for a one time use code to be used to log in.
Below are some links to the most popular sites on how to set up additional security for your accounts:
Twitter - Using Twitters Login Verification
Google - Guide to Google's 2-Step Verification
Apple - As well as my post mentioned above, have a look a this
Microsoft - Guide to Microsoft 2 step verification
Hopefully you will find the above helpful, in all likelihood you will not be hacked by some state funded activist, but some people want access to the information in your accounts etc so always best to keep your account as secure as possible.
Any questions give me a shout!
